Large Truck Accidents

You are here because you have been injured or have lost a loved one during a serious accident with a truck. Unfortunately you are not alone.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration large trucks and buses were involved in 3,085 non-fatal accidents last year. In these accidents over two thousand injuries were reported. These numbers do not address the accidents that caused over 100 deaths in our state each year.

Accidents with Logging Trucks Cause Catastrophic Injuries

While semi-trucks are common in all areas of the country we have a particularly large number of trucks in southwest Louisiana. This is due in part to the fact that the logging industry is a major part of the local economy.

I understand the pressures placed on the employees of our local logging companies. I know that drivers of these large, unwieldy trucks are doing their best to make money and work hard, that big logging companies care more about their bottom line than the safety of their employees. However, the safety of the drivers and bikers across southwest and central Louisiana are my main concern. I have seen too many clients and friends seriously injured during an accident with a large truck.

The most common ways that logging trucks cause accidents are through:

• Improperly secured loads- Flying debris is a serious danger to drivers and motorcyclists. Even more deadly is a load of logs that comes loose from its bindings and rolls onto the road. Even the smallest log can cause a major accident if it strikes a vehicle.
• Logs that exceed bed length- When a load is longer than the bed of the trailer or truck any logs or equipment hanging over the back must be flagged. Un-flagged logs cause many serious accidents as driver and bikers may not see the log as they attempt to maneuver around what appears to be the end of the load.
• Dangerous driving- This can include distracted, drowsy or aggressive driving that leads to an accident.
• Overloaded trucks- One of the major risks of overloading a truck is diminished braking capabilities. This can cause a driver to be unable to stop his truck quickly or, in some cases, stop it at all. In addition, a too high load can make the trailer top heavy, causing it to tip and overturn.
